The $1,000 phone myth

A few years ago, when Samsung dropped the Galaxy S20 series on us, with prices starting at $1,000 for the lowest-end model, I was worried. This definitely looks like the start of the smartphone industry adopting a pricing scheme where we have to pay $1,000 to get what we want.

But then 2021 happened and Samsung dropped the price on the S21 line (they also cut some specs), while Google relaunched its Pixel line under a new design with a very reasonable starting point. And now that 2022 is almost over, we’re happy to report that the $1,000 phone is rarer than expected.

To be clear, you can still pay more than $1,000 for a phone or foldable. What I’m saying after all the experience with the 2022 and its best phones is that if you want an amazing device without any big missing pieces, you really don’t need to consider a $1,000 phone. The Galaxy S22 Ultra exists with a $1,200 price tag, as does the Galaxy Fold 3 at around $2,000. They’re too much and that’s okay! If you need a phone that doubles as a phone and a tablet, or something curved and an embedded S Pen, there’s a device for you.

However, the list of excellent phones that can be found for under $1,000 and that we still want to buy, is not short. There’s the Pixel 7, a phone I can’t give up anytime soon – it starts at $599. The larger Pixel 7 Pro has one more camera and more RAM and a higher-refresh rate display for $899. The cheapest OnePlus 10 Pro started at $899, but the permanent price has dropped to $799. The highest spec version of the OnePlus 10 Pro is also south of $1,000 at $870. The Galaxy S22 starts at $799 and the Galaxy S22+ starts at $999, but we all know Samsung will take any old phone and immediately knock $100s off that price. The same goes for the Galaxy Flip 4, my personal favorite foldable.

Want to spend less and still get a great device? The Pixel 6a, which people have voted as the best camera on the planet, starts at $449, but has been discounted to $299 frequently since its launch. The OnePlus 10T has many high-end specs and is priced under $700. Even Motorola’s top-tier phone for 2022 started with a $100 discount to $899 and has seen enough discounts over the years that I’m not sure it ever cost $999. It’s currently 50% off.

If there’s one trend we hope will stick in 2022, it’s the lack of $1,000 phones. The phones that came out this year that cost a few hundred less than the $1,000 mark are so good that we don’t need to spend any more.

California has banned Tesla from calling its software full-self-driving

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a new bill into law that effectively bans Tesla from advertising its cars as fully self-driving, official technology reports. The law states that starting January 1, 2023, Tesla will not be able to use the term full-self driving, commonly abbreviated as FSD, to refer to a feature of its vehicles.

Senate Bill 1398, sponsored by Democratic state Sen. Lena Gonzalez, prohibits dealers and automakers from “deceptively naming or marketing” a vehicle as self-driving if it still requires human attention and intervention. Reports state that the state DMV already had rules prohibiting this type of false advertising, but a lack of enforcement led Gonzalez and state legislators to advance the bill so that it is now state law.

“(This bill) increases consumer safety by requiring dealers and manufacturers who sell new passenger vehicles equipped with a semi-autonomous driving assistance feature… to provide a clear description of the features’ functionality and limitations,” Gonzalez said in a statement (PDF). Tesla says it already makes its customers aware of software limitations.

It’s something we’ve always wondered about, as Tesla vehicles have never progressed beyond Level 2 self-driving capability, as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) document J3106 in 2014. Level 2 means the car can accelerate, steer, brake, and maintain or change lanes and avoid front-end collisions, but still can’t drive itself from point A to point B without human attention, ready to take over. In sticky conditions or if the vehicle cannot read pavement markings or road markings.

In any common sense lesson, this is not fully self-driving. Levels 3 and 4 are very close to self-driving, and Level 5 means fully autonomous even on roads that aren’t mapped or in heavy storms. To date, there are no vehicles available to consumers with Level 3, 4, or 5 self-driving capabilities.

Tesla sells FSD as an additional over-the-air option for $15,000 or $199 per month. A statement on the automaker’s website about the feature says: “Currently enabled Autopilot, Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous. Full autonomy will depend on achieving far greater reliability than human drivers as demonstrated by billions of miles of experience, as well as regulatory approval, which may take longer in some jurisdictions.” The automaker also said on its website that all new vehicles are already required to add FSD in the future. The hardware is there.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in 2017 that he planned to drive Tesla cars across the country without the need for human assistance before 2018. As PCMag reports, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened two more accident investigations last week. Accidents in which the Tesla FSD is alleged to be at least partially responsible.

Earlier this month, a filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) indicated that Tesla was working on a new radar system operating in the 76-77GHz range. The filing suggests the automaker plans to bring back a radar hardware component to at least some of its models, raising questions about whether existing vehicles without this hardware will be good enough to drive themselves without human intervention.

LastPass Vault backup gets stolen

head up, last pass Account owner. A blog post this week revealed detailed, new information linked to a hack that occurred earlier this year. At the time, the hack wasn’t exactly newsworthy for us (we’re just an Android blog), as LastPass said a hacker only got access to a developer test environment and some source code. However, because of that hack, a subsequent event recently occurred where hackers were able to compromise LassPass employee accounts and gain access to more.

As detailed by LastPass, someone was able to gain access to encrypted backup copies of customer vault data This vault data contains everything a user can store with the service We’re talking about account usernames, passwords, banking information, and everything else For a hacker, it can be loaded with mom.

According to LastPass, these vaults are encrypted with some serious security, meaning the user should not be able to access this stolen data without a master password. Fortunately, those master passwords are not stored by LastPass, so as long as the hacker is unable to force-pass the vault (assuming a correct password), the most sensitive user data should be safe.

I’m not a security expert so I’ll let LastPass better explain what’s going on

To date, we have determined that once the cloud storage access keys and dual storage container decryption keys were obtained, the threat actor copied information from backups that contained primary customer account information and related metadata, including company name, end user name, billing address. The email address, telephone number and IP address from which customers were accessing the LastPass service.

The threat actor was able to copy a backup of Customer Vault data from an encrypted storage container that is stored in a proprietary binary format that contains both encrypted data such as website URLs, as well as fully-encrypted sensitive fields such as website usernames. and passwords, secure notes, and form fill data. These encrypted fields are protected with 256-bit AES encryption and can only be decrypted with a unique encryption key derived from each user’s master password using our zero-knowledge architecture. As a reminder, master passwords are never known to LastPass and are not stored or maintained by LastPass. Encryption and decryption of data is performed only in the local LastPass client.

There is no evidence that any encrypted credit card data was accessed. LastPass does not store full credit card numbers and credit card information is not stored in this cloud storage environment.

what should you do

As long as a LastPass user uses the company’s best practices in choosing a master password, the company says, “It would take millions of years to guess your master password using commonly-available password-cracking technologies.” That’s reassuring. However, if you’re a little worried about your information, you might want to start changing your password. If you want to be overly safe.

Godfather Android malware targets 400+ banks and crypto exchanges

This site may earn affiliate commissions from links on this page. Terms of Use.

After disappearing for several months, the new trending godfather Android malware is back with a vengeance, targeting more than 400 international financial institutions. The Trojan creates fake login pages to collect customer login details, and that’s just the beginning. Godfather also mimics Google’s pre-installed security tools in an attempt to gain complete control over devices.

Godfather was discovered by malware analytics firm Group IB, with the first samples appearing in June 2021. It is believed that this malware originated from another popular bank hacker known as Anubis The Godfather aired on a low level until June 2022, when it disappeared. It seems the operators were just preparing a new version. The Godfather came back with a vengeance in September this year, targeting a whopping 400 financial institutions: 215 international banks, 94 cryptocurrency wallets and 110 crypto exchanges.

Once installed on a device, Godfather will create fake login pages, which it can use to obtain usernames and passwords. Many banks and crypto firms have additional login requirements, and that’s where Godfather’s other mechanisms come into play. After installation, the malware disguises itself as a Google Play Protect alert Thinking it’s a legitimate popup from Android’s default security suite, some users will grant the malware accessibility controls. At that point, Godfather can record screens, read SMS, stop fake notifications, make calls and more — everything necessary to compromise your bank account or crypto vault.

Godfather fake Play Protect popup.

The malware appears to be spreading through decoy apps on the Play Store. Group IB has not determined who created and profited from the Godfathers, but they highly suspect they are Russian speakers. The malware has a kill switch that checks the OS language setting. If it finds that the default language is one of the languages spoken in former Soviet states (except Ukrainian), it will shut down instead of stealing data. It’s not exactly a smoking gun, but it’s pretty suspicious.

After evaluating Telegram channels, Group IB believes that Godfather is an example of Malware-as-a-Service (MaaS). Manufacturers essentially license malware to third parties, which can provide them with juicy financial details without the hassle of developing the malware and infrastructure. It targets institutions all over the world, including the United States (49 sites), Turkey (31), Spain (30) and Canada (22). If you think you’ve been infected, remove accessibility from all installed apps (usually under Settings > Accessibility) and change your important password using a different device.

Kohler announces Alexa-equipped ‘smart toilet’, yours for just $11,500

This site may earn affiliate commissions from links on this page. Terms of Use.

When the pandemic hit and no one could find toilet paper, many people converted to using bidets. By using a stream of water to clean your backside, you not only save money on toilet paper, you also help reduce waste. Now Kohler has introduced the most premium bidet imaginable. It’s so advanced, it’s not even a bidet; It is an “intelligent toilet”. With a sky-high price tag of $11,500, you can expect it to tickle your bum every time and wash the dishes too. While it won’t do the latter, it earns its title by being loaded with technology you’d never expect to find in a toilet.

First, it has Amazon’s Alexa. Thanks to the built-in microphone, you can control the features of the toilet with your voice. We just hope Alexa isn’t always listening or recording. The toilet has Spotify built-in, so you can stream music to drown out unwanted noise. When you first walk into the Numi 2.0 intelligent toilet it detects your presence and automatically raises the seat. Kohler says it has a feature called Comfort Height. This means it’s taller than a regular toilet, so it’s easier to get on and off. You’ll be greeted by a warming seat pad as you gently lower yourself down. If it is midnight, there is a bright ring around the base. Once you’re in place, it blows warm air out from underneath to keep your feet warm.

While sitting in Numi is undoubtedly comfortable, the real fun begins when you finish your business. You can choose from two different flush sizes — 0.8 or 1.0 gpf — and the stainless steel “wand” that sprays gives you plenty of options. You can choose to have the front or back sprayed. Also, you can adjust the angle of the spray, water pressure and temperature. You can also choose to keep it vibrating or oscillating if you enjoy that sensation. If you’re the lazy type, you can have it flush automatically 60 seconds after it detects your exit. If you just want to do a number 1, the bowl has an LED for easy nighttime tinkling. Once you are done and the areas around you are cleaned, it will dry with a stream of hot air.

The toilet will even keep the stick clean with a UV light to help identify things. Kohler says it uses an “electrolyzed water system,” which helps it sterilize. The bowl is also “misplaced” before cleaning to simplify the process as a pre-rinse. There’s even an emergency reservoir that allows 100 flushes even if the power goes out. Talk about a toilet for the apocalypse.

There’s also a wireless, touch-screen remote if you don’t want to talk on your toilet. It can be mounted anywhere in the house and attached to any wall. It allows you to change the water temperature, angle and type of spray and everything else. It’s about the size of a smartphone and similar to the original iPhone.

The cleaning wand intelligently retracts and extends when it senses that a bowel movement is imminent. (Photo: Kohler)

As a premium product, Kohler doesn’t want you to buy the toilet yourself. For as little as $699, you can get Kohler’s virtual bathroom design service. This will give you access to three virtual meetings with Kohler designers about your plans. The company will send you high-resolution floor plans and renderings so you can see what it will look like. The product page lets you download 2D and 3D files of it, so you can add it to your design.

Sadly, the Numi 2.0 is only available in white. The previous 1.0 version was also offered in black, which looks slick all lit up. As The Verge points out, the Numi 2.0 is available through distributors, but you’ll soon be able to buy it directly from Kohler.
