Google has introduced two new modes Chrome browser this week, with both modes slated to roll out across all platforms in the next few weeks. The modes are called Memory Saver and Energy Saver, and with names like those, I’m sure you’ll know what to do.

Memory Saver is designed for my friends who have many tabs open, all eating up precious memory on their devices According to Google’s description of the new feature, “Memory Saver Mode frees up memory from tabs you’re not currently using so active websites you’re browsing have the best possible experience.”

For example, if I’m editing a video in Final Cut Pro, I know that having Chrome open in the background isn’t eating up a ton of resources. I’ll be sure to let Kellen know about the existence of this feature, since I see the guy with like 50 tabs open constantly.

Next up is the Energy Saver, designed for, you guessed it, conserve energy. Like Battery Saver on Pixel phones, when your portable device hits less than 20%, Chrome will automatically limit background activity and visual effects from sites with animations and videos. This automatic feature can be toggled inside Chrome settings, if you don’t want it.

As we approach the new year, we’re getting an early peek at what we can look forward to in 2023, the latest OnePlus 11 From OnePlus. What does OnePlus have in store for us? Are they going to revert to their aggressive nature of years past, looking to recapture the spark they once had? If you can determine the answer to that question with a single report render of the device, today is your day. Spoiler alert, what I’m about to do.

In this render, we see OnePlus continuing its deal with Hasselblad, sticking to a massive camera module on the back of this phone. We’re seeing a total of 3 cameras, reported to be a 50-megapixel lens, 48MP lens and 32MP lens. Other specs posted alongside this image include Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, a 6.7-inch QHD+ AMOLED display, an option for up to 16GB of RAM, and a full 5,000mAh battery with support for up to 100W charging speeds.

Looking at OPPO’s recent devices, I’m yet to see a twin sibling device in its lineup, but I’m guessing we’ll see one that matches this phone in the same way very soon. This has been a turn-off for OnePlus as of late, with OPPO and OnePlus sharing hardware and software with different branding for different markets. I’ll be honest, it makes a phone feel a lot less special. It’s more like OnePlus’ antipathy was crushed a long time ago and now they slap their and Hasselblad’s names on OPPO hardware and call it good. I’m not trying to be rude, but it’s my opinion, sorry.

2022 was not OnePlus’ year here in the US. The company’s release schedule for the OnePlus 10 and OnePlus 10 Pro was perhaps the worst, with the company releasing its Pro model first, but only in China. Later down the road it came to the US ( review here ), but by then, the market was consumed by genuine Samsung purchases and Google Pixel 7 hype. OnePlus has no room for error in the US market. This market needs a new and exciting (and unique) approach, but if I had to make a guess based on a single image of a reported device, I’d say this isn’t it. I hope I’m wrong, though. I’m sick and tired of this being a 2 Android OEM show.

After a long period of hemming and hawing (and, to be fair, some pretty ugly economic fluctuations), Microsoft has decided to raise the price of first-party Xbox games from $59.99 to $69.99. The change marks Xbox’s first significant price increase in nearly 17 years

Beginning in 2023, Xbox Series X and Series S games like Redfall, Starfield, and Forza Motorsport will cost $69.99 at launch. According to a statement shared with fellow publication IGN, the new pricing “reflects the content, scale and technical complexity” of the affected Xbox Game Studio titles. Cost will likely vary across countries, but Xbox has yet to share any pricing details outside the US.

While the price tags themselves will experience a pretty sudden change, Microsoft’s decision to implement the $10 increase has been a slow build. 2K Games has raised the price of NBA 2K21 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X to $70 in 2020, prompting other developers and distributors to wonder if they could get away with similar increases in the near future. And they did: Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard and others hit the $70 mark earlier this year.

Then Microsoft itself began to entertain the idea of ​​a price hike. As our colleagues at IGN reported, Xbox chief Phil Spencer said last month that Microsoft would have to raise the price of its video games “at some point.” Spencer said the increase wouldn’t happen until this year’s holiday season, and he appears to have kept that promise.

Microsoft has confirmed that all titles included in the price increase will still hit Game Pass on release day, as usual. For some gamers, this makes the decision to use Xbox’s subscription streaming service even more obvious: Why pay an extra $10 upfront when Game Pass prices are stable? Apple has made it clear that they have no plans to bring iMessage to Android. They know it keeps their users on the platform, and Android users are clearly fine with the green bubble bullying that results in a broken messaging experience that iPhone users complain about when talking to someone without a phone like theirs.

Since there may be no official iMessage app or service on Android, the messaging industry has taken several stabs at creating an unofficial iMessage client. Mostly weird implementations, including one that required you to buy an old iPhone and then set it up as a make-shift server to relay the iMessage experience to your Android phone. Yes, it was as bad as it sounds.

From a company called Next Effort Sunbird And they believe they have the real experience you want.

Sunbird has created an all-in-one messaging client that is “the first and only full-featured iMessage for Android app.” Let me try and explain what that means.

According to Sunbird, this means that you only need an Android phone and about 60 seconds to set up iMessage on your Android phone. There is no need for a personal server or Apple device or desktop software. Again, this is the opposite of the weird wrong-server concepts we’ve seen in the past.

This means you get fully encrypted messages, Internet messaging, full-quality media, group chats, feedback and tap back, live-typing indicators and read receipts. Perhaps most importantly, this means your messages (from your Android phone) will appear as blue bubbles on an iPhone.

Sunbird does more than just iMessage, though. It will also serve as your text message app, plus it can connect to WhatsApp (including group messaging) and Facebook Messenger. Plans to add Telegram, RCS, Signal, Line, Slack, Discord and Instagram down the road. Again, this is an all-in-one messaging service.

Really like to hear and know what the catch is? At this time, Sunbird is not releasing a catch. They are telling people the right things to sign up for a beta list to test the app

For example, they claim that Sunbird “does not store user data”, by which it refers to login credentials and messages you send. Other such services use relay services or require you to store your credentials to work properly, but Sunbird says they do none of that. In fact, during a briefing with them, they repeatedly indicated that they tried to make it so that no data was stored.

It’s not open source, because they’ve developed some kind of solution that they want to keep locked up. They believe they have solved any past problems that made iMessage on Android not possible.

What about the cost? It’s been a subscription model, right? Apparently not yet. Sunbird told us the service will be free and if they want to monetize later they can, but for now they just want to use it. It’s a bit of a red flag for me. There’s nothing better than creating a service you know people will love, telling them it’s free, and then flipping the credit card machine when they’re well committed.

And that’s all I’ve got for now. This sounds like the best iMessage for Android idea so far, but I haven’t tested it and don’t know when I will. At this time, Sunbird is asking the world to sign-up to test Sunbird in a closed beta. They’ll throw out invites before they open it at some point (or until they sell the technology, because how are they going to make money?).

Keeping track of all your passwords is difficult, especially when you have to constantly choose complex and varied passwords to maintain some semblance of security online. LastPass was founded in 2008 to make things easier, but it’s developing an unfortunate reputation. The company announced that it recently suffered a security breach, its second in six months. And if you look further back, this only happens at LastPass.

According to the latest LastPass blog post, its security team recently detected unusual activity on a cloud storage account it shares with its partner brand GoTo. After investigating, the team confirmed that unknown attackers used data acquired during the previous August 2022 breach to gain access to the system. At the time, LastPass claimed there was no evidence the breach included access to user data, but now they have.

LastPass said it alerted law enforcement and continues to work to fully understand the scope of the latest intrusion. That’s a bit of a sticking point, though. Although LastPass said cybercriminals accessed “certain elements” of customer information, it did not provide any specifics beyond one admittedly key point: customer passwords. LastPass encrypts all user passwords and has no way to decrypt them. So even if attackers manage to copy user account data, it is unlikely that they will be able to access it.

LastPass has an extensive history of security flaws for a small company that has only been around since 2008. In 2011, attackers stole user data from LastPass, forcing users to change their master passwords. This happened again in 2015, when LastPass started using strong encryption. In 2016, 2017 and 2019, there were serious vulnerabilities reported by security researchers, all of which were patched. Just last year, users had to change their master passwords after malicious login attempts that the company blamed on credential stuffing. However, victims claimed that their LastPass credentials were unique. We never got around to it, but here we are in 2022 with a pair of LastPass violations.

Passwords are an imperfect way to protect accounts. You either choose strong passwords that require a third party to manage, or you keep passwords simple In either case, you can get hacked. No wonder Microsoft, Google and others are trying to kill the password.

When Google announced the new Google Wallet in May, digital IDs were one of the main new features they highlighted as one of the reasons they reintroduced the “Wallet” name. While not supported at first, the idea was that one day, perhaps down the road, we’d be able to add a digital driver’s license or state ID to Google Wallet and truly ditch our physical double.

In an update that rolled out with Google Play Services v48.22 for December, Google suggested that it was going to open up Digital ID (driver’s license and state ID) as a Google Wallet beta feature.

In the latest changelog posted on the Google System Update support page, a bullet point under the Wallets section says the following:

[Phone] Beta feature to allow users from select US state(s) to digitize their state ID/driver’s license into Google Wallet for convenient, private and secure presentation.

There is a reference note that links this change to the Google Play Services version I mentioned above. We’re not sure if there’s an update to Google Wallet or a new way to opt-in to Google Wallet’s beta track to make this beta magic happen, but I imagine it will. I checked at the time of this posting and Google Wallet doesn’t have any beta opt-ins in the Play Store listing yet

Another key thing to consider here is the “Users from selected US state(s)” part. Most US states do not allow a state ID or driver’s license to be digitized. Apple recently launched Digital ID and so far, according to MacRumors, only 3 states are supported. Another 9 states have pledged their support down the road.

Unfortunately, this single line for a Google system update page is all we need to continue for now. This note sure feels like it needs a deeper announcement from Google.
