Another day, another T-Mobile data breach

Starting from January is not very good. T Mobile Another data breach was announced this week, this time affecting nearly 37 million customer accounts. Unlike other data breaches, where customer data is sometimes saved, this time it wasn’t. In this data breach, T-Mobile details that data was accessed, including name, billing address, email, phone number, date of birth, account number and information such as the number of lines on an account and service plan attributes.

T-Mobile tries not to make it so bad that much of this data is already “widely available” through marketing directories and databases. Importantly, the carrier specifically states that “no passwords, payment card information, Social Security numbers, government ID numbers or other financial account information were compromised.”

We are currently in the process of notifying affected customers that after a thorough investigation we have determined that a bad actor used a single application programming interface (or API) to access limited information on their accounts.

As soon as our teams identified the issue, we closed it within 24 hours. Our systems and policies prevent access to the most sensitive types of customer information, and as a result, this event should not put customer accounts and money directly at risk. There is no evidence that a bad actor breached or compromised T-Mobile’s network or systems.

For a little timeline, T-Mobile noted that the activity stopped within 24 hours of being noticed. However, not written in its press release, but filed with the SEC, T-Mobile says it believes “bad actors” began retrieving data through the affected API in November of last year.

In the last part of the SEC filing, T-Mobile says it expects the news not to have a material impact on its operations. Simply put, they don’t expect customers to get too upset and take their business elsewhere.

How much faster is T-Mobile’s 5G than Verizon and AT&T?

It’s not a bad move to start the year and tell yourself you might be ready to find a new wireless carrier. As you probably know, there is a never-ending battle to claim the 5G crown, even though all the 5G promises from 5 years ago never materialized. Still, the US wireless industry is at least starting to give us decent 5G connectivity for the most part, and it’s never a bad idea to see who’s offering what.

In a new 5G report by Okla, we saw that state of 5G in Q4 2022 from AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. This report examines overall network download and upload speed, latency, consistency, video performance scores before separating them into 5G-specific categories for speed, availability, etc.

As has been the case in several cases Okla In reports like this, T-Mobile ran away with most categories. In the overall download speed category, they posted an impressive median speed of 151Mbps, while Verizon and AT&T dropped to 69Mbps and 65Mbps, respectively. Other categories were close, such as latency and consistency and video scores, but then T-Mobile pulled itself away in 5G breakout territory.

T-Mobile 5G speed

As for 5G performance, T-Mobile posted a median download speed of 216Mbps, while Verizon and AT&T posted speeds of 127Mbps and 85Mbps. Even for 5G availability, T-Mobile takes the crown at 69%, AT&T close behind at 64% and Verizon in the corner at 34% (?!?).

Are you fed up with those statistics and want to know more about the city or state you live in? cool This report covers all 50 states plus DC and the winner is T-Mobile in 46 of them. The other 5 were either tied or AT&T won. As for cities, the report looked at the 100 most populous cities, and yes, T-Mobile dominated with 86 wins. Verizon took the honors in a single city, and then came close to calling 13 cities.

And for those curious, one of the fastest tests I ran this week in Portland on T-Mobile topped out at 1Gbps download speeds. I got same score last week. In the same location, my Verizon phone could barely hold a “5G” signal

T-Mobile 5G speed

Finally, on a related note, the report shared the devices with the fastest average download speeds and the top two are the Galaxy Fold 4 and Pixel 7 Pro followed by the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

I’m not trying to sell you on T-Mobile, but I’m trying to remind you that the days of people complaining about T-Mobile having a dog**t network are long gone. If you live anywhere near a city, they are probably the best carrier in terms of speed and 5G availability.

YouTube TV’s 4K add-on comes down to an incredible price for something

Over the weekend, many YouTube TV subscribers noticed that a special deal had been flagged for their accounts. For some, the deal seemed almost too good to pass up, especially if they wanted some of the highest quality content possible. I’m talking about the YouTube TV 4K add-on, which has been incredibly overpriced for most of its existence, but has been offered to select subscribers for as low as $4.99 per month.

If you checkout this Reddit thread, you’ll have no problem finding people who have been offered the YouTube TV 4K add-on promo. I can’t say I’m one of them, but many are seeing an offer that includes 24 months of service for $4.99. Others have looked at $6.99/mo or $9.99/mo.

YouTube TV’s 4K content still seems pretty limited, so paying anything more than $5 might not be worth it. The full price of $19.99/mo is not worth spending in my household, if all you get is a few sports events and some Nat Geo or FX content. I think offline viewing can be a big deal to some.

Availability of this $4.99/mo offer is unknown. As I mentioned, people noticed the price earlier in the weekend, but many YouTube TV subscribers (including myself) are only seeing the full price for the 4K add-on. This could be a brief opportunity to drop prices or Google is sick of offering core Crew promos. I’m kidding there because we really have no idea who is being targeted.

If you are offered a decent 4K price, let us know how long you have been a customer

Reserve a Galaxy S23 Ultra and get $50: Here’s how

For those who missed it the other day, Samsung has more than announced that on February 1st they will officially showcase the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Ultra. They’ve also launched their standard reservation system, which is your first chance to let them know how excited you are about their new phone, even if they haven’t told us what it is yet. It’s a strange thing, but we’re used to it happening.

The Galaxy S23 reservation system is similar to all that have come before it. It’s a free system (here) that lets you show Samsung your interest in buying their new phone We believe these new phones will be the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra. By filling out Samsung’s form, you’re in no way committing to buying the Galaxy S23 and instead simply saying, “Hey Samsung guys, I might want to buy this if the launch deal is good enough and if the S23 has some surprises that’ll win me over.” ” That’s it.

Most years, Samsung tries to sell you on reserving by offering additional pre-order goodies on top of the other pre-order goodies they have planned. For example, they’re offering a bonus $100 trade-in credit with reservations for the Galaxy Fold 3, up to $200 credit for the Fold 4 a few months ago, and an additional $50 credit to spend alongside the Galaxy S22.

For the Galaxy S23 launch, Samsung is again offering that bonus $50 credit, though you can double that to $100 if you tell them you can also get their new Galaxy Book. We don’t know yet what other launch or pre-order bonuses Samsung will push, but they’re usually pretty good. During the Galaxy S22’s pre-order period, they’re offering up to $200 in credit towards spending on accessories, plus up to $700 off on trade-ins. I bet we’ll see something similar this year.

Again, the system is free to use and it doesn’t lock you into anything. Samsung uses your information to gauge interest and will send you an email upon opening the pre-order.

Reserve the Galaxy S23 or Galaxy S23 Ultra

HBO Max Price Hike Inbound

In its latest edition, “Wow, this thing costs more than ever,” HBO Max announced today that it is increasing the price of its paid tier. Already one of the more expensive streaming options, the price will increase by $1 to $15.99/month for new subscribers starting this Thursday, January 14. For existing customers, it looks like you’ll get one more billing cycle before switching. What a beauty.

Meanwhile, HBO Max has made headlines of late for removing content from the platform. Subscribers lost access to like shows Westworld And Sesame Street, and while obviously these changes don’t affect every single user, those affected by this content removal must be ridiculously upset. I will be. We are all officially paying more but getting less and only in reality are we currently a part of what can be considered acceptable practices by these multi-billion dollar companies.

I don’t get it, folks.

What will I continue to pay? Yes, that loses me big time. It hurts us all. I’m still working up the courage to cancel my Netflix account after the countless times they’ve raised my subscription price, but sorry, they have some good shows and movies. What’s a hopeless content streaming whore to do? I got stuck.

The Perseverance rover has marked a Martian year on the Red Planet

Perseverance landed on Mars on February 8, 2021. This was about two Earth years ago. But the wheel of the year turns slowly on Mars. Just a few days ago, Persistence identified one of its-Mars-year anniversary.

A sol, or Martian day, is less than an hour longer than an Earth day. By comparison, a Martian year is almost twice as long as an Earth year – 687 Earth days, or just shy of 669 Sol. This is partly because Mars, being so far away, takes out a large orbit around the Sun. However, Mars’ orbital eccentricity is also quite large, causing its seasons to vary significantly in length.

Right now, it’s springing for Persistence, where it and its companion helicopter Ingenuity hang out in a basin between Jezero Crater. Once it was turned on for the warm season, the rover immediately began caching sample tubes for the upcoming Mars sample return mission. But this time, instead of diligently drilling rock cores, the child is collecting regolith samples from sand dunes.

Winter is the shortest season on Mars, but it still reaches -190F. That’s cold enough to turn Mars’ carbon dioxide atmosphere into dry ice. To keep its electronics from cracking in the bitter cold of Martian’s first winter, mission engineers ran the rover down to reach a uniform temperature. Fortunately, in the Northern Hemisphere (where all our rovers are), spring is the longest season, lasting 194 days.

You can use this zoomable widget from NASA to see what the pair have been up to day by day since their mission began:

In spring and summer, it is surprisingly smooth. Surface temperatures near the Martian equator can reach 70F during warm seasons. The summer months bring their own dangers; Spring is dust storm season on Mars. NASA’s InSight Mars lander recently succumbed to slow-moving dust on its solar panels. Earlier, Chance “died” on Mars after a terrible dust storm that engulfed the entire planet. Still, persistence pays off.

How does persistence keep time on Mars?

We don’t have a single, unified timekeeping standard on Mars. With twice as many days in a year, it is difficult to draw a direct Martian analog to our Gregorian calendar. NASA decided, quite arbitrarily, that recorded time on Mars would begin on April 11, 1955. (There was one really Bad dust storm on Mars that spring.) However, Mars also has sol dates, indexed to the Julian calendar by a real equation. To define seasons, currently, scientists use Lcome, for solar longitude. At 0° of solar longitude, it is the top of the year, so to speak. In L.Acome 90°, the Red Planet has its local equinox in the Northern Hemisphere.

When it comes to setting your clock, Airy Mean Time (AMT) is the beloved Martian analog of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). We have Greenwich, England; Mars has Airy Crater. But Mars also has solar time and local mean solar time. Honestly, it’s like the USB standard of the time: yes never Be the only one

Did you know perseverance has a pet stone? The rover captured this image of its pet rock on May 26, 2022 (Sol 449) using its onboard hazard avoidance camera. Photo credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

The Persistence rover project syncs its mission clock to local mean solar time, at the rover’s planned landing longitude of 77.43°E. This corresponds to a mission clock of AMT+05:09:43. The actual landing site was about 0.02° (1.2 km) east, a difference of about 5 seconds in solar time.

On Earth, it is negligible within the same time zone. However, Mars does not use the same time zone as Earth. The LMST changes, depending on the rover’s speed across the Martian surface. At 18.4°N, the rover (or helicopter) moves east-west with a time difference of about one second every 234 m. Perseverance marks its days when it descends near Sol 0 at 15:54 LMST (10:44 AMT).

Happy first Tuesday birthday, little friend.
