Google’s Chrome browser has always been a notorious RAM hog. There are countless benefits to reducing resource costs, and Google’s engineers claim to have reduced the overall footprint of the browser. This can be very useful for the company’s Chromebook. In a new blog post, the company discusses a bizarre strategy it is testing in Chrome to reduce CPU activity for improved battery life. Although the blog discusses its behavior on Chromebooks, it is expected to be available to any Chrome user if it is successful in the long run.
What Google is doing is testing a new way to deal with hidden tabs. These are tabs in the browser that are not visible to the user. If you’re like us, it could be between 20-40 tabs (at least) patiently sitting. Currently, Google allows those tabs to sit for five minutes before dropping the JavaScript throttle. After five minutes, it checks the tabs every minute. This ensures that it is ready for users to see when they get close to it. This is called Intense Wake Up Throttling and is originally shipped to Chrome 86.

The website Aboutchromebooks has noticed a change in Chrome OS 105 though. This is a Dave Channel build, so it’s time to test new features. In this version of the OS, Chrome’s five-minute timer has been changed to a 10-second timer. This will allow JavaScript to run for five minutes on any hidden tab before throttling. As you can imagine if you have a lot of hidden tabs it can dramatically affect battery life. Documentation explains the reason for the change. It notes, “tHe was chosen to allow the 5 minute timeout to be extremely conservative and allow for the introduction of intensive wake up throttling with minimal regression risk. So now we’re considering reducing the timeout to 10 seconds, only for those pages that are loaded when they are hidden.Fast intensive timer throttling of loaded background pages. “
The document further states that it has so far tested positive. “It is expected to extend battery life. A test in the Canary and Dave channels revealed no regression in our guiding metrics and a significant improvement (~ 10%) in CPU time when all tabs are hidden and silent. “A 10 percent reduction in overall CPU time is the same as a 10 percent improvement in battery life. Not a thing – any lifetime improvement would be a fraction of that amount.

The Google Pixel Watch (of course) is going to be a must-have item in the vicinity of the DL office, Google and everyone’s first smartwatch. Even if we don’t know all the details surrounding its specs and features and price, it is definitely a device we need. But now, after a leak today from Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 line-up, the Pixel Watch looks like the last hope of excitement in 2022.
Let’s talk about what we know is coming in 2022.
We know that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are coming and what they look like. There will be improvements (like Tensor 2), but let’s be honest, what we’ve seen so far is that the Pixel 6 is off like a minor upgrade on the line. We know that Samsung may release a Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4 next week, also with a slight improvement over the previous generation. We’re sure OnePlus is going to offer an awkward upgrade to the OnePlus 10T. We know that Nothing Phone (1) is not coming here. We know that OSOM has sold their soul into the sketchy world of crypto.
2022 looks like a mid-range year for phones. And if not a bust, because the quality of the device should be high, then it looks at least like a snoozey one. Needless to say, most of the devices I mentioned above will not be able to upgrade or upgrade depending on your current device, it’s just that it won’t be a year for new ones-ness.
So as soon as the phone takes shape in that fashion, we move on to wearable things and that’s where the Pixel Watch vs. Galaxy Watch 5 comes into play.
As I mentioned at the beginning, the Pixel Watch is the obvious choice for me. Not just because it’s Google’s first smartwatch, but because Samsung’s watch line-up is like a phone that everyone is going to reveal – nothing new.
The Samsung guy is going to show up now and say, “The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is brand new, you’re stupid!” And yes, man, it is. Have you seen it though? That deep dish donkey design looks thicker than a foot and with a battery we hope to create a case that looks silly on everyone’s wrist whose name is not Dwayne Johnson? And the regular Galaxy Watch 5 is a simple copy of the Galaxy Watch 4, a fine line of watch, but we’ve already seen that. What am I excited about here, a skin temperature sensor?
Pair the already-played design with Samsung meh One UI Watch software and I will pass. Please give me the pixel watch.
The Pixel Watch is a new tech in a smartwatch design that, as clear as it is, has its rolling crown at its curved bottom and top, and that domed glass with a stainless back. Google has managed to create a smartwatch that looks like a watch, not just another piece of wearable technology. The size of the case seems to be for the average person’s wrist, it’s thin, we’ve been told it will run a “new Wear OS experience” and there will be deep integration of that Fitbit. It should quickly connect to your phone and fit perfectly into the Google Pixel ecosystem, which I enjoy from others.
There are some concerns about the older Exynos 9110 chipset that Google has chosen to use, but if another rumor of Google customizing the experience by adding a co-processor is true, it will provide a better experience than Qualcomm’s 4100 line. The removable At a Glance widget on the main screen of the Google Pixel phone has quickly moved away from an annoying widget that works a little on an advanced system that can show you all kinds of information. It wasn’t too long ago that it was originally only used as a calendar, weather and travel widget. Thanks to a recent update, it can now show you information from your Nest camera, air quality in your area, and if you forgot to turn off your flashlight.
Soon, there’s another important thing to do at a glance – report the status of the timer you set on a nearby Google Assistant smart speaker like Nest Hub. The strings found in the latest beta version of the Google App (v13.26) suggest that a “cross device timer” feature is coming.

2022 could be a difficult year for Meter, formerly known as Facebook. Chief Product Officer Chris Cox posted a memo to employees this past week outlining the challenges the company is facing, and describing the weak times ahead. In the memo, Cox mentions “We’re here at a critical time and the headwinds are deadly.” He added that the company has to perform flawlessly despite lagging behind in new appointments and reigning in the budget. At Google I / O in May, Google announced a feature called “Look and Talk” for the Nest Hub Max. The idea behind it was to allow users to interact with their Nest Hub without having to say “OK, Google” and instead just to view the device within a certain range. Now after enabling it in my kitchen unit, I can say without a doubt that this feature is great.
A full-fledged Nest cam has been created on the Nest Hub Max, so Google is using this particular device to start the life of this “look and talk” concept. Thanks to Google Assistant on Nest Hub, Face Match is training to recognize your face, so that Nest Cam can notice that you are nearby and start listening if you have any orders.
I launched the feature earlier in the week when Google announced that it was launching widely and I have used it many times. My kitchen unit is probably the most suitable for this, as I can just lean from one corner of my small kitchen space to the other and fire the assistant. Simple tasks like setting a timer, managing multiple timers, asking for a recipe, adjusting my home temperature, looking at my front door camera, or calling my wife to the Duo, I can now do with and without the most dirty hands To shout that damn keyword.
It may sound like a simple solution that doesn’t deserve this kind of praise, but man, I’m one of those people who absolutely hates to say “Hey, Google.” For example, if I had to say that keyword in order to do something, I would almost always reach for my phone and either swipe from one corner to dismiss the assistant or I would do it manually from an app. I don’t know what it is, but that keyword is the worst. This eliminates my need for it, also it actually saves time in the kitchen when a matter of seconds can take you from cooking to burning completely.
If you own Nest Hub Max and want to try it out, it’s really easy to set up.
First, you need to make sure that the face match is set-up. Open the Google Home app on your phone and tap the Settings button, then tap “Google Assistant” in the Properties section and then select “Face Match”. The steps to setup there mostly ask you to scan your face a few times from side to side.
Once you set up Face Match, you can turn Face Match on or off from the page you set up. You will see a toggle for “Look and Talk” there. Toggling it gives you the ability I described above.
Note: If you have a problem and it doesn’t seem to be working, it has been fixed by retraining my face.
Once set-up, whenever you come within 5-10 feet of your Nest Hub Max, you’ll see 4 black (or white) dots on top of your display when it recognizes you and waits for an order. If you close a command, you’ll see familiar auxiliary-colored dots and respond. It’s magical, I’m telling you.
Of course, for the privacy-centric people around you, it may seem like your Nest Hub Max is constantly spying on you. I don’t know what to tell you there. I’m not here to change your mind about what Google sees or doesn’t see – I’m telling you that this feature works great for me when I’m doing it in the kitchen.

There is an old saying in technology that never buy a first generation product. As far as Apple Silicon is concerned, however, you could be better off if you do. Reviewers are looking for new ways that the new, M2-equipped MacBook Pro base system is a weaker product than its predecessor. Now, real-world testing has found evidence that the M2-equipped base model MacBook takes a hefty fine if placed in a heavy DRAM load. For now, only the baseline M2 with 256GB SSD storage and 8GB of unified memory has been reported to be affected.
Over the past few days, we’ve seen evidence that only half of the entry-level MacBook Pro M1 offers SSD controller channels and this affects its theoretical storage performance. We also know that the 13 ″ base system gets as hot as 108C on the test. Thanks to a new video from the same channel, we have now found evidence that the Baseline M2-equipped system loses a significant amount of performance and system responsiveness when under load compared to 16GB M2.
YouTube tech channel Max Tech’s Vadim Ureiv M2 is running at speed, with some tests on the 8GB M2 with both 256GB and 512GB of storage. This test isolates the effect of the SSD and reveals a problem with the design. At least some of the 8GB M1’s performance comes courtesy of the SSD controller configuration – and with just one IC, the platform can’t maintain the same speed.
A 12.5-percent performance hit doesn’t seem so bad, although we usually don’t expect a transfer from one NVMe SSD to another that would cause such a discrepancy. But see what happens when Urive loads the system with a Chrome browsing session at the same time. Both the top and bottom systems are 8GB systems:

This trend was not unique to Chrome; The safari looks similar. Exporting a 4K video to a different application had the same problem. Performance tanks when placed in a working pressure system, and reactivity is damaged. These problems continue across several benchmarks. When the M2’s RAM is full, the system often takes a heavy performance hit. M1 does not system.

In these tests, the 512GB M2 model is not 15 percent faster, it is 55 percent faster. And according to Max Tech’s video, system responsiveness on M2 systems with 8GB of RAM goes into the tank when these exports enter gear. The tested 16GB variant did not have these issues.
Comparing the M1 with the 8GB and 16GB flavors, it showed that it lost performance when equipped with only 8GB of RAM, but the performance hits were much lower. The M1 with 8GB was 1.23x slower than the M1 16GB in specific tests. M2 8GB slows down to 1.79x.
Why is this happening?
The problem here is that M2 is being forced to stream data from SSD once it runs out of main memory. The Baseline M1 has two physical connections to the IC that make up its SSD. M2 has one. This means that when the system tries to lean on the SSD instead of the extra memory, the M2’s SSD cannot feed the CPU. I’m really surprised at how slow the M2 is in web browsing when rendering the output (it’s not clear if the 8GB M1 has been similarly affected, the video compares the 8GB and 16GB M2 flavors).
Obviously, sometimes there is a performance difference between 8GB M2 and 16GB M2, even when DRAM power is not being pushed. The M2’s low SSD controller bandwidth can hit non-compute benchmarks and real-world workloads, depending on how you load the system.
What’s the matter? I would argue that it does, for a variety of reasons:
First, it’s a clear performance regression on first generation products and it’s never good. Second, it introduces uncertainty and suspicion into the product line. In some cases, an 8GB M2 is 1.15x – 1.8x slower than a 16GB M2. Third, Apple is doing a poor job of communicating about exactly how much DRAM and SSD storage its customers have to pay to enjoy an M2 that isn’t effectively crippled.
There is no such thing as a memory upgrade if you buy an M1 or an M2. With the price of DDR5 down, there is no way to buy a system now and double its RAM in a few years. The RAM you pick up today will allow the system to last the rest of its life, which is why it is one A little Apple has not revealed how big the performance will be for the M2’s Gimpy storage. Apple, if anything, needs to do a better job than the equivalent PC maker to understand how important RAM loadout is for the long-term life of a system.
Fourth, there is evidence that the 8GB M2 user experience will go straight to hell if you tap out of its RAM, when the M1 is not seen, based on the relative performance of each loss. Seeing Maxtek trying to surf the web on an 8GB M2 while running a workload gave me a flashback to running antivirus scans and surfing the web on bad old single-core days.
I doubt Apple would argue that the various workloads tested by Urive are not representative of the workloads expected to be run by customers. It’s fair, a point – but only a point. Apple Silicon has no problem with the same work pressure with the same RAM as the first generation. Moreover, Apple did not reach out to reviewers and did not suggest sticking to their simple test after the return of M1 reviews in 2020.
Lots of audio / video benchmarks have been released that show that an M1-equipped laptop is capable of beating Apple’s Intel-based. Desktop, And I personally know a few people who took advantage of the Apple Silicon launch to shuffle CPU manufacturers. Baseline M2 is a clear step backwards from M1 in that regard. This is especially true if you are looking for a new MacBook capability. Nowadays 8GB RAM is not so much, however, if you only need to buy a system with 8GB, buy an M1 based system that takes 25 percent performance hits (compared to M2) and is responsive, runs out of memory, M2 entry-level Not the MacBook Pro which takes 1.8x Shi Celeron’s ram in the late 1990s offered hits and responsiveness when it ran out.
Don’t buy an entry-level M2
At the moment, there is no reason to consider a 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro if you have the option to purchase a different MacBook. An 8GB M1 system matches most other computer benchmarks with an 8GB M2 system and runs cool, possibly cheaper, and can be more responsive to heavy loads. While these issues don’t seem to affect the more expensive models, which offer more RAM, fan and SSD storage, the M2-powered MacBook Pro starts at 1299. It’s good in the boutique area for PC laptops, and it requires you to buy a system that can perform. One Simultaneously work high performance while surfing the internet.
The complicated thing is that these M2 base models are only available from Apple without any waiting. If you want one of the non-crippling machines, you’re looking at a few weeks delay and a lot more money.
